Whale Shark Update. Dec 21, 2012
Today at Sogood Bay was a great day for True Blue Adventure Scuba Diving and all the guests and crew aboard our dive boat the “ Adventure Scuba “ . Even before we arrived at our destination Pentauan (which is where the whale sharks are at the moment). We encountered a pod of very playful porpoises’ . They were swimming in front of the bow and outriggers, jumping and playing with the boat for about 10 minutes. Everyone was thrilled with the playful porpoises, we see them often but they don’t always put on a show like they did today. Our German guests were saying even if we don’t see whale sharks , the porpoises alone were worth the trip.
But it didn’t stop there. Once we were on the other side of Sogood Bay and in the whale shark grounds we saw the 1st whale shark within 5 minutes. Because the guests were all ready to go we didn’t miss the opportunity and immediately entered the water. And Wow what a site! A medium size whale shark (16 feet long) was swimming directly towards us with his huge mouth wide open skimming plankton from the water. As he neared us he turned and swam along side us showing off his immense size to us all. Because of the clear water we could see all the details of the whale shark the gills swaying with each breath, the beautiful bluish color, white spots , the long lateral line running down its side and even a small remora eel hitching a ride under his chin. It was definitely a Kodak moment. The folks with cameras were getting pics of a lifetime as we kept snorkeling with the giant fish. The encounter didn’t end there. After about ½ hour a second larger whale shark rose up from the depths to join the 1st fish. Then it really got fun with the 3 spotter boats picking up divers after the sharks would go past , then bringing us up in front of the sharks so we could roll back in the water and watch them come up to us again and again for the next hour. But all good things come to an end , they eventually dove down and gave me one last look as they swam away about 10 feet below me and disappeared into the distance. It was very exciting and fun for all. Seeing the smiles on the faces of our guests is always a rewarding feeling , and knowing that we can help them fulfill their dreams makes this a very rewarding career.
